Term 2 Week 8
Principal Update
Welcome to the end of week 8, it has been an exciting couple of weeks and we have some fun ahead of us.
Thank you, Winton Shire Council, for buying all our students a new school jumper, we got these on a very chilly morning which was perfect timing. Now we have school jumpers, the expectation is that students are wearing these to school. In extenuating circumstances where the school jumper may not be able to worn, a plain maroon, royal/navy blue and black jumper may be worn (plain block colour, no logos, pictures, writing etc.). This should be occasional in special circumstances though, the regular winter uniform is the school jumper supplied by the council.
Thanks to the local emergency services who accepted the challenge of a touch football game against our school. This was a really exciting event for our school and we thank the wider community for also supporting this. We intend on holding this challenge once per term with different sports, watch this space for the term 3 challenge.
Our students and teachers have been busy preparing for the show. They have been working very hard on their work pieces for this and we look forward to seeing the display on the day. Thanks to our 5/6 students and families for managing the entry gates as a fundraiser for camp.
Congratulations to Jett Searle who is at State trials this week and continuing over the weekend for touch in Rockhampton. We wish him luck and are proud of his efforts to get this far.
We have athletics carnival coming up in week 10, this will be held on Tuesday 18th June at the Footy fields. The St Pat's team are running the canteen. Students from Kindy to year 3 will be given a pre-order form for canteen, all others can purchase on the day. Students are to be dropped off and collected from the field on this day and need to return a permission note. All families are welcome and encouraged to attend on the day.
We have been fortunate to work with QGOMA (Queensland Gallery of Modern Art) on an Artist in Residence project. This has given us the opportunity to welcome Aunty Sharyn Malone to Winton, and our school. Aunty Sharyn will be working with our students next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. She will work each day with our First Nations students, and our primary and high school art students will also have the opportunity to learn from her. This is a really exciting opportunity for our students and school, and a partnership we are confident will continue beyond this artist in residence project. We look forward to our learning and experience to come next week and will share back with everyone early next term.
Attendance is becoming a problem at the moment across the school. The colder weather is definitely making it harder to get up and going in the morning, however it is essential students are still at school on time every day. If they are unwell, we certainly encourage them to stay home until they are well, however in a lot of cases absences are due to many reasons other than illness. If there are challenges we can assist with around your child’s attendance, please reach out to the school.
With only two weeks until holidays I want to thank all families for your support with finishing the term strong. Teachers are busy preparing report cards and we will distribute these to families via email towards the end of term. Students are still completing assessment and will commence new units of work prior to the holidays. Students will be in active learning right up to the break.
As always, please reach out to us if we can do anything to support your students.
Take care,
Meggin
Emergency Services vs Winton State School
Thank you to all who came and supported our first Emergency Services vs Winton State School challenge. We appreciate all who played and spectated! Thank you to Mrs Smith for being our ref as well as Shai and Brit for cooking the BBQ!
Art Cases Unlocked
Years 3-8 recently got a chance to get up close and personal with a range of art pieces touring the region from the National Gallery of Australia. Sarah from the QANTAS Musuem in Longreach brought us two very heavy cases of 3D art pieces from around the world, ranging from 30 to 1000 years of age. We discussed and got to hold the pieces (very carefully) examining them closely. Patricia Piccinini’s furry creature caused a particular stir with its lifelike part-human part-animal features, inspiring some interesting hybrid creature drawings from the students. Thank you, NGA, and Sarah, for this unique teaching and learning opportunity.
The Twits
The team from Shake and Stir came to town to perform The Twits for our Primary kids and share their drama skills in a masterclass workshop with our Years 3-6. Drama is all about getting out of your comfort zone, moving your bodies, and having fun - and our middle and upper primary kids showed they could do just that with some clever and entertaining improvised pair work, collaborating as one team (to beat Mrs Twit at her own game!), voice work, and so much more. The performance was enjoyed by all, with some debate from the younger ones on our way home afterwards over who was their favourite - Mr or Mrs Twit!
Welcome Aunty Sharon
We are excited to welcome Aunty Sharon to Winton State School.
Aunty Sharon is a Koa Woman and is an artist in residence with us for two weeks. Aunty Sharon will be working with our students across the next weeek.
As we approach NAIDOC week, we are looking forward to learning from Aunty Sharon.
Kindy & Prep
This week in Kindy/Prep we have been trying to beat the cold weather. We have been engaging in some gross motor experiences outside in the later part of the mornings. We have been playing tennis, digging in the sandpit and building Lego. Thanks you so much to Miss Shai and the Winton Shire Council for our lovely warm jumpers.
We have been also working really hard on finalising show work for the upcoming Winton Show.
Thank you Miss Crawford
We have been lucky in Year 3, 4, and 5 to have had Miss Crawford in our class. She has made learning fun and engaging for all of us. We have built bridges and paper planes in Science, puzzles, made sundials and coloring in for time, we learnt about Reconciliation Week and why it is important, spelling competitions and so much. We would like to thank her for all that she has done and taught over the last six weeks.
